This Thursday, April 14th, is the debut of my radio show on WorldSalsaRadio.com. Join me as I broadcast from Chiba, Japan, at 21:00 local time. That is 05:00 Pacific / 08:00 Eastern / 12:00 GMT. “Encanto Tropical” is the name of the show—alluding to the visceral charm of Afro-Cuban/Latin rhythms rooted in the Caribbean. I will deliver 2 hours of mainly salsa music every 2nd and 4th Thursday. In addition to playing tunes spanning different decades and styles, this show features 4 ‘spotlights’, with 3 songs in each of the following themes. Newly-released salsa music Latin music by Japanese artists Cuban classics in memory of my late father Selected songs by an interviewed guest It’s a great pleasure to join the WorldSalsaRadio team! A Puerto Rican native and resident of Seattle, Steve Guasch will talk about his roles as a musician, band promoter, and record label manager. A percussionist and bandleader, he first caught my attention with the 2006 album "Sigueando La Tradición" by Orquesta Nueva Era. He now focuses much of his time promoting musicians and bands for the Salsaneo label. Next on June 9 for Encanto Tropical at WorldSalsaRadio.com: it's a pleasure to have Giany-Frantz Huyghues-Despointes from Lengaïa Salsa Brava as the guest of Episode 5. Giany Despointes is a trombone player based in Montreal, Canada, where he founded and directs Lengaïa Salsa Brava orchestra, which released a very promising debut album, Impacto, in 2018. Then in 2020 came the highly-acclaimed, award-winning album, The Gold Diggers, with a number of hit songs, including "Don Nadie" which Giany Despointes himself composed. The future looks bright for Giany Despointes and Canada's most successful salsa band, so I am thrilled to have such a special guest. It should be another interesting guest feature on 'Encanto Tropical'.
